The world relies on a variety of energy sources. In 2018 fossil fuels, such as oil, gas and coal, made up more than 81 percent of energy consumed. Renewable energy sources like solar power, wind power, biomass, and hydroelectricity account for 14 percent. Nuclear energy contributes another 5 percent. Different countries use different sources of energy to meet the environmental and economic demands.
Energy is found in nature in many forms: sunlight as well as wind, waves ocean and many more. When harnessed and converted into more practical forms of energy, such as heat or electricity, these are called primary sources. These energies become non-renewable sources of energy when they are exhausted.
The environment is harmed due to a wide range of fossil fuels in addition to other sources of energy that are not renewable. For instance mining for oil may degrade the world’s forests. Fracking (hydraulic fracturing) can result in water pollution and earthquakes. Burning coal releases carbon dioxide, which contributes to global warming.
Fortunately, the majority of the most promising sources of energy are sustainable and renewable. Hydropower, wind and solar for instance, can generate electricity without the need to dig for new supplies.
Tidal and Wave Power are two other renewable energy sources that are emerging. But, in order to be used at a large scale these technologies require efficient distribution networks. They need to be constructed, which requires the use of non-renewable energy sources. These sources aren’t sufficient to satisfy ibm solutions in technical and management directions the majority of our energy demands. But it’s important keep in mind that the costs for renewable energy equipment have dropped drastically over the last few years, and efficiency is growing quickly.
